Plus Size Evening Coats

Once upon a time every woman about town had an evening coat. But these days how easy is it to find plus size evening coats. Not as easy as you would think. I myself had this difficulty last year, when I was invited to attend a formal ball on a cold New York winter evening. At the time I just had to use my trusty long black wool coat and added a velvet scarf for a little panache. I felt a little like Calamity Jane in the scene where she arrives at the dance in an old army coat to reveal her fabulous frock underneath. My husband assures me that my coat did look elegant enough but, boy, do I wish I’d had a little more time to peruse the plus size evening coats that are available out there!

So we don’t all have the luxury of being able to purchase plus size designer clothes, but there are ways that you can achieve a women’s size plus designer look, and all it takes is a little thought and time. The first thing to do is to take a look at two clothing trends for this Fall/Winter.

Quirky – For your inspiration with this look, think Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. Carrie’s use of quirky accessories really makes her outfits look individual.
The easiest way to copy her look is to add a fabric flower corsage to a jacket lapel, a sweater or knit cardigan or a clutch. The clutch bag should be over sized, which is great for plus size women as the bigger the clutch the smaller you will look, it’s all about proportion. Using a corsage in this way means that you can be sure that no one will be wearing the same outfit as you.

Think about adding a piece statement jewelry, the bigger the beads the better, again it’s all about proportion. Choosing a new necklace, bracelet or costume ring, can really update an outfit. Gothic – For this designer look you need to think about fabrics and trim, as well as color. Plus size women often have a tendency to stick to black, we are all under the impression that it makes us look slimmer, however, just because I’m talking about gothic doesn’t mean you have to stick to black. Silver gray, pewter, deep purple and burgundy reds are other colors you should think about. Stitching a small piece of metallic or black lace trim, under a simple vest or sweater top can add a touch of indivduality to an outfit. You could perhaps add a piece of applique, or a vintage style brooch. Even the buttons on a shirt can easily be changed. Remember it is all in the detail. A designer piece of clothing would never have plain buttons.
